Keeping Iowans on Top of the Food Chain Since 1922!

The Killer Zone

Letter to Dale Earnhardt Jr

Dear Mr. Earndhardt,

First, we hope this message makes it to you!  We are big racing fans and owners of  B&B Grocery, Meat & Deli, a small family-owned butcher shop in Des Moines, Iowa.  While not all of us root for you, you can bet that some of us will be cheering for you during this racing season.

We are writing you today after reading that PETA asked you to consider them sponsoring your car.  Well, we would like to ask if you would consider putting our (and other small family-owned businesses)  message on your car.  Just like you, we are the third generation in our family’s business.  Our grandfather first started our butcher shop in 1922 when he was 16 years old!   Our father was 10 years old when he started helping by stocking shelves.  Of course, we were about the same age when we started working too.  We are proud to continue the family butcher shop and have even become known for our Killer Sandwiches.  In fact, our Dad’s Killer Sandwich was voted the best deli sandwich in Des Moines, Iowa.  Let’s just say we are masters at cutting beef (and other types of meat) and making Killer Sandwiches!

As you no doubt know, there are thousands of family-owned small businesses located all across the United States.   These businesses are very much part of each community that they serve.  By supporting a small business, you are helping the entire community.   Unfortunately, small businesses most likely don’t have the luxury to take advantage of an advertising avenue such as being a sponsor on a NASCAR car.

Imagine how you would invigorate local economies by having small businesses sponsoring your car.  You would help many family-owned businesses and local entrepreneurs get exposure that would turn into more sales and jobs!   We believe a third generation racecar driver would be the perfect representative for all the family-owned, multi-generational businesses that exist in America!

Thanks in advance for your consideration.  We invite you to stop by for a Killer Sandwich to further discuss you supporting family-owned business such as ours.

Best Regards,

Joe & John Brooks
3rd Generation at
B&B Grocery, Meat & Deli

P.S.  Just in case you don’t believe that we are race fans, we already support local racing as evidenced by the picture attached to this letter.

Happy Birthday Grandpa

We want to wish our Grandpa Brannan, our mom’s dad, a Happy Birthday! He would have been 107 if he was with us today!

Eat Chicken Wings the Right Way!

There are going to be a lot of football parties this weekend and most of them will have chicken wings to chow down on!  We’ve seen a lot of you eat those chicken wings and it is about time we tell you there is a proper way to devour a good wing!  You may have a technique that works for you, but being butchers, we want to ensure every piece of meat is cleaned of the bone.

So, to help some of you guys and gals out, here is a great video, from our friends at the Food Network, showing the do’s and don’ts for eating wings.  Just in time for the big game!!!

We’re keeping Iowans, and Wing Lovers,
on Top of the Food Chain!

SE 6th & Hartford DART Stop

Public transportation has had a stop at SE 6th and Hartford Ave since it started on the Southside.  It is something that was utilized by our grandfather’s generation, our father’s generation, and our generation.  We want to keep that stop for future generations too.

Therefore, there is a petition available to sign at B&B Grocery, Meat & Deli.  The petition states:

The people signing the attached would like the service restored to the stop at SE 6th Street and Hartford.  Many of these people are seniors who now have to go over to Indianola and Hartford.  This is a major obstacle for residents using mobility devises or who otherwise need assistance with walking such a distance with few sidewalks, especially in bad weather.  Even in good weather it is dangerous for people to be walking in the street.  There are also people in the neighborhood that use DART transportation to and from work.  The Neighborhood Development Corporation is constructing a building between Hartford and Hillside at SE 6th.  This building will contain apartments with people that will also need transportation.

Please stop by and sign this petition to ensure our neighbors have access to DART at SE 6th and Hartford.

Please say a prayer for Noah

Most of you know that Noah is special to B&B and the Brooks family.  We  have seen him grow up and have helped his mission of attending middle school at Weeks Middle School.  We have just learned that Noah was hospitalized.  Therefore, we ask that everyone send some prayer Noah’s way!

2-5-2013 Update – YAY! We got word that Noah is home from the hospital! Thanks for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers!!!

2-1-2013 Update – A quick update…Noah is doing better, but is still hospitalized. So, please continue to keep CasaNoah in your prayers.

Cheers….The Brooks Family!

Ice storm doesn’t stop Disc Golf for week 82

The ice storm didn’t stop us from throwing some Killer disc golf!  The tee boxes were iced over so to de-iced the tee boxes with some rock salt.  This allowed us to use the tee boxes without falling all over the place.  Joe shot a 65 for the win.

Congrats to the Harbaugh Brothers!

The Brooks brothers want to congratulate the Harbaugh brothers for the wins yesterday.  We hope you have a Killer game in a couple weeks.  Hey Ray, pardon the pun!

Frisbee Golf Week 81

Week 81 and Joe shoots his all-time personal best disc golf score of 59!

The proper way to get a Tic Tac

We know there are a lot of our customers who have a mint after eating a Killer Sandwich.  We understand.  Who wants bad breath when they are back at work?  No one.  Tic Tacs are commonly used since they are in an easy to carry container.   Getting them out of the container can be a chore.  Well, we’re here to help our customers.

Did you know the lid of a Tic Tac container is designed to dispense one Tic Tac?  No, you don’t have to shake and hope one falls out.  It is a rather easy procedure.  Check out this video showing the proper technique of removing a Tic Tac from its packaging.

Now, you have no excuse for having bad breath!

Life in the Killer Zone!

Slakingfool is a food, travel, and alcohol blogger who recently wrote a piece about the Killer Zone titled, “Life in the Killer Zone“.   He made multiple trips and even shared a shot of Templeton Rye with us.   Here is some of what he said:

“Getting a bite off the tenderloin I appreciated the well-seasoned flavor of the pork and the crispness of the exterior. My Reuben sported a pile of tender corned beef that disappeared into my slaking pie-hole all too soon. The impressively chunky egg salad soon followed. Still peckish I snagged a trio of smooth, mustardy deviled eggs for dessert.”

Slakingfool’s blog post has a lot of great pictures and we highly recommend you read it.  Here is the link to Slakingfool’s blog post, “Life in the Killer Zone!
